The platform announced the change as part of an effort to improve the Shorts experience while giving creators who produce original videos a better opportunity to reach viewers.
ORIGINAL CONTENT GETS GREATER PRIORITY
Under the updated recommendation approach, channels that primarily aggregate or re-upload other creators’ videos without making significant changes are likely to receive less distribution in the Shorts feed.
YouTube said the change is intended to ensure that creators producing original material have a stronger opportunity to grow on the platform.
The update does not mean that creators are prohibited from using clips from other videos. Instead, YouTube is encouraging creators who use third-party clips to add meaningful value through original commentary, distinctive editing, storytelling or their own perspective.
MINOR EDITS MAY NOT BE ENOUGH
YouTube is also discouraging creators from relying on small technical changes or template-based edits simply to make reused material appear different.
The platform wants creators to contribute something distinctive rather than simply repackaging existing videos.
This means accounts built largely around reposting clips could see their Shorts reach reduced, while creators who add substantial original input may continue to benefit from the format.
CLIPS CAN STILL BE USED
The change does not amount to a complete ban on clips from other creators.
Creators can still use existing footage when they transform it with meaningful commentary, storytelling or creative editing. YouTube's focus is on whether the resulting Short provides original value rather than simply reproducing another creator's work.
WHAT THE CHANGE MEANS FOR CREATORS
The adjustment puts greater emphasis on originality as creators compete for visibility within the Shorts feed.
For channels that have relied heavily on reposting videos without substantial additions, the new recommendation approach could reduce how widely their content is distributed.
Creators looking to build sustainable audiences on Shorts are therefore being encouraged to develop their own voice, ideas and storytelling rather than depending primarily on material produced by others.
