Xi’s participation is expected to strengthen cooperation among BRICS members and promote closer coordination among countries of the Global South.
India, which holds the BRICS presidency in 2026, has adopted “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” as the theme for its presidency. The country has also emphasized a people-centered approach and stronger cooperation among developing nations.
BRICS was originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India and China before South Africa joined. The group has since expanded to 11 members, collectively representing about 49.5 percent of the world’s population, 40 percent of global GDP and 26 percent of global trade.
Xi’s attendance highlights China’s continued role in BRICS cooperation and comes at a significant moment for relations between China and India.
The visit will be Xi’s first trip to India in seven years. Both countries are founding members of BRICS, while China is scheduled to take over the group’s rotating presidency next year.
The summit is also expected to provide opportunities for BRICS members to strengthen economic cooperation and address challenges facing developing economies, including disruptions to global supply chains and unilateral trade measures.
Emerging areas such as the digital economy, green development and artificial intelligence are also creating new opportunities for cooperation among BRICS countries.
The New Development Bank, established by BRICS, has expanded its financing activities in recent years. By the end of 2025, it had approved $42.9 billion in financing for 139 projects covering clean energy, transportation, water and sanitation, environmental protection, and social and digital infrastructure.
The New Delhi summit is expected to further discussions on economic cooperation, sustainable development and greater coordination among BRICS members.
