Holmes raised the issue during an event at the White House on Monday, asking Trump about comments made by Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff concerning Harp, one of the president’s executive assistants.
The White House’s “Rapid Response” account later attacked Holmes on X, accusing her of using an event honouring a teenage lifeguard to raise what it described as an inappropriate question about a member of Trump’s staff.
Trump also confronted Holmes during the event, calling her “very disrespectful” after she asked another question concerning North Korea. He told the reporter to be quiet and accused her of being “fake news.”
CNN defended Holmes and rejected the attacks, saying the criticism directed at its reporter was unacceptable.
The dispute followed recent attention around Harp, who has become a prominent figure among Trump’s White House aides. She has frequently been seen alongside the president and has reportedly been responsible for providing him with printed information, leading to her nickname, the “human printer.”
Harp also drew renewed public attention after reports that she was among the few aides accompanying Trump during a secret Air Force One aircraft swap in July.
Ossoff had criticised Trump over his association with Harp during a campaign speech, while Trump responded by attacking the senator and defending his plans for a new ballroom at the White House.
The latest confrontation has added to continuing tensions between the Trump administration and sections of the US press over questions involving the president and his administration.
