The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UNIZIK chapter, announced the industrial action after a congress meeting held on Monday, September 7. The union said its members had resolved to withdraw both academic and administrative services until the outstanding portion of their August salaries is fully paid.
The lecturers said the decision was taken in line with a standing resolution of the ASUU National Executive Council, which allows branches to withdraw their services when salaries remain unpaid after the third day of the following month.
According to the union, September 7 marked the third day of the new month, yet members had not received their complete August salaries. ASUU-UNIZIK also said the salary problem had occurred more than three times, describing the situation as frustrating for its members.
The union stressed that the sole reason for the strike is the non-payment of the complete August salary. It called on the university authorities and the institution's Visitor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to urgently intervene and ensure that the outstanding salaries are paid.
ASUU directed all its members to immediately stop providing academic and administrative services. The action includes teaching and other academic responsibilities and will continue until the full August salary is paid.
The development is expected to affect academic activities at the university, including lectures and other duties handled by members of the academic union.
When contacted for a response, the university's Director of Information and Public Relations, Aloysius Attah, declined to comment on the development.
The strike will remain in effect until the outstanding portion of the August 2026 salary is fully paid to the affected lecturers.
