The new deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026, giving individuals, organisations and institutions additional time to prepare and submit their contributions.
The extension was announced on Thursday by the Chairman of the Working Group and Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila.
Gbajabiamila said the decision was intended to allow more stakeholders to make well-considered contributions to the proposed National Policing Bill. He stressed that broad consultation remained an important part of the process.
The Working Group is seeking input from legal practitioners, civil society organisations, security professionals, state governments, professional bodies, academics and members of the public.
The proposed legislation is expected to establish the operational, administrative, institutional and funding framework for Nigeria's new policing architecture. It is also expected to include safeguards relating to accountability, professionalism and the protection of citizens' rights.
The Working Group said all submissions must be made through the official National Policing Bill portal before the new deadline.
At the conclusion of its assignment, the panel is expected to produce a final, implementation-ready draft of the National Policing Bill for onward legislative processing.
The extension comes as the Federal Government continues efforts to develop a legal framework for state policing, following growing calls for a decentralised approach to addressing Nigeria's security challenges.
