The incident occurred on Tuesday along the Makurdi-Gboko federal highway, where a group of youths blocked Obi’s convoy as he travelled from Makurdi towards Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area.
Obi was in Benue as part of his political activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election. He had also planned to visit Yelwata to sympathise with victims and families affected by the killings in the community.
The situation developed after Obi’s convoy encountered a roadblock on the two-lane highway. The obstruction caused traffic congestion as the road was blocked.
The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, confirmed on Wednesday that 46 suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident.
Nwadiogbu said the investigation was still ongoing, adding that police were also pursuing key leaders among the youths involved in the incident. He warned against political intolerance as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
According to the police, officers deployed to the area acted in a professional and tactical manner to prevent the situation from escalating. Obi was subsequently escorted safely back to the airport and left the state.
Obi expressed concern over the incident and said he had travelled to Benue to show solidarity with people affected by the killings in Yelwata.
He also appealed to security agencies to intervene, describing the obstruction of his movement as unacceptable.
The incident has attracted reactions from political figures and groups, with concerns raised about political intolerance and the need to protect freedom of movement ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Benue State Government has denied involvement in the incident and rejected allegations linking Governor Hyacinth Alia or his administration to the youths who blocked Obi’s convoy.
The police investigation remains ongoing.
