The attack occurred between midnight on Monday and the early hours of Tuesday, August 18, according to residents who spoke about the incident.
An eyewitness, Daniel Musa, said the attackers, who were heavily armed, went from house to house, forcing their way into homes and attacking residents who were asleep.
Musa said more than 20 deaths had been confirmed as of Tuesday morning, while several others sustained serious injuries and some residents remained missing.
Another resident, John Dalyop, confirmed the attack and described the situation as terrible. He called for stronger security measures in Mangu and other vulnerable communities across Plateau State.
Residents said some of those injured had been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while community leaders and residents were working to determine the whereabouts of those still missing.
Security operatives were reportedly deployed to the community on Tuesday morning to restore calm and prevent further attacks.
Efforts by Vanguard to obtain comments from security authorities before the report was filed were unsuccessful.
The incident has renewed concerns over attacks on communities in parts of Plateau State, particularly in areas where residents remain vulnerable to armed attacks.
