The 5th National Senior Citizens' Sports and Fitness Games Pickleball Exchange Event recently concluded in Changsha, Hunan province, bringing together 32 teams and 390 athletes and accompanying personnel from across the country.
Participants competed in men's doubles, women's doubles, mixed doubles and mixed team events during the competition.
A SPORT ATTRACTING OLDER PLAYERS
Pickleball combines elements of racket sports with a smaller court and lighter equipment, making it an accessible option for people who may find some other sports more physically demanding.
For Chen Yan, a participant from Liaoning province who previously played tennis, the sport offered a less strenuous alternative after experiencing tennis elbow.
She said the lighter rackets and smaller court made pickleball easier on the arm, while the social aspect of the sport was another attraction.
Players at the event were able to meet participants from different parts of China, exchange tips and maintain contact after matches.
COMPETITION BRINGS PLAYERS TOGETHER
The Changsha event featured several competition formats, including men's and women's doubles as well as mixed doubles and mixed team competitions.
The group stage used single games played to 11 points, while knockout matches were decided by single games played to 15 points.
Team rankings were determined using results from the three individual events.
The format gave players opportunities to compete while also encouraging interaction among participants from different regions.
SUPPORT SERVICES DESIGNED FOR SENIOR PLAYERS
Organisers also put measures in place to accommodate the needs of older participants.
The Changsha competition area upgraded its venues and arranged accommodation, transportation, medical services and security.
Participants were required to provide health examination certificates and accident and sudden-illness insurance as part of the registration process.
Organisers also advised competitors with chronic health conditions to take their medication as scheduled, warm up properly and manage their pace during competition.
PICKLEBALL'S GROWING APPEAL
The growing participation of older adults reflects the expanding appeal of pickleball as both a recreational activity and a competitive sport.
Its relatively small playing area, lightweight equipment and social nature have helped attract people who want to remain active while participating in a group activity.
The Changsha event provided another example of how pickleball is being incorporated into sports and fitness activities for older people in China.
