The incident occurred in Osogbo on Wednesday after Governor Ademola Adeleke visited the monarch’s palace accompanied by his nephew, Davido. Gunshots were heard as the two groups clashed outside the palace.
According to the police, the confrontation began after a suspected political thug, Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged,” was prevented by Davido’s security details from gaining access to the singer.
The police said the incident escalated after members of the man’s alleged cult group arrived and attempted to force their way through the security cordon, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
The clash temporarily disrupted access to the palace, but Davido’s security details eventually overpowered the group, allowing the governor’s convoy to leave the area.
Police spokesperson DSP Abiodun Ojelabi said security personnel used tear gas and fired into the air during the confrontation.
The police later received a report that a 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, had been shot in the Ita-Olokan area of Osogbo after the group reportedly moved away from the palace towards Ayepe.
Yusuf was reportedly killed in the shooting.
Ojelabi confirmed the incident and said an investigation had commenced. The Commissioner of Police in charge of the election, Samuel Etaifo, also said resources would be deployed to apprehend the suspect.
Davido, in a post on X, distanced himself and the governor from the confrontation, saying the fight occurred outside the palace and had nothing to do with them.
The incident comes as security remains heightened across Osun State following the governorship election and amid continued political activity in the state.
