OpenAI Faces Another Wave of Executive Departures in 2026

Among the prominent departures is Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s former chief operating officer, who announced that he was leaving after eight years with the company. Lightcap said he planned to start something new while continuing to support OpenAI’s mission from outside the organisation.
Other major exits and leadership changes this year include Fidji Simo, who moved into an advisory role after serving as CEO of Applications, and Johannes Heidecke, the former head of Safety Systems, who left as OpenAI reorganised its research and safety operations.
Joshua Achiam, who previously served as chief futurist, also departed in July. He said he had been considering the move for some time and believed it was possible to continue contributing to OpenAI’s mission from outside a frontier AI laboratory.
The company also saw the departure of Kevin Weil, its former chief product officer, who later began working on a new AI science startup. Bill Peebles, who led the Sora video project, and Srinivas Narayanan, OpenAI’s chief technology officer for B2B applications, were also among the executives who left earlier this year.
Other departures highlighted in the company's 2026 leadership changes include executives and senior figures from areas such as AI safety, ethics, research and product development.
The turnover comes as OpenAI continues to change its organisational structure and place greater emphasis on commercial products, enterprise customers and preparations for a potential public listing.
Despite the departures, OpenAI has continued expanding its products and infrastructure while competing aggressively with rivals such as Anthropic.
The latest wave of exits has nevertheless placed renewed attention on the company's leadership structure and the direction of its research, safety and commercial operations.
