City are understood to have rejected an opening offer of £38.5 million ($52 million) from the Spanish champions for the 30-year-old midfielder. Barcelona could return with an improved bid.
Rodri has only one season remaining on his Manchester City contract and has been linked with a return to Spain. City are reportedly seeking around £68 million for the midfielder.
The Spain international recently returned to pre-season training after undergoing back surgery following his country’s World Cup triumph. He was the last City player to report for pre-season.
Maresca said the club’s position could change before the transfer window closes.
“Anything can happen,” the City manager said, while confirming that he had recently seen Rodri at the club and that the midfielder appeared to be recovering well.
Rodri played a key role in Manchester City’s successful years under former manager Pep Guardiola, winning Premier League titles and the Champions League. He also won Euro 2024 and the Ballon d’Or that same year.
His situation has become one of the major issues surrounding City as Maresca prepares the team for the new season.
The manager also acknowledged that City still have transfer business to complete, particularly if more players leave the club.
Meanwhile, Tijjani Reijnders is reportedly close to joining Saudi Arabian club Al Qadsiah, while City have already strengthened their midfield with the £116 million signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.
City will face Arsenal in the Community Shield this weekend as Maresca begins his competitive tenure at the club.
