Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticised the plan on Thursday in a post on X, arguing that Washington’s decision to intensify economic pressure would bring further failure rather than force Iran to change course.
Araghchi also accused the United States of using economic pressure as a tool against other countries and warned that the approach could have consequences for the wider global economy.
Trump had announced what he called the most severe economic operation ever imposed against a country. He warned that countries allowing their financial institutions, businesses, airports or government bodies to provide assistance to Iran would face serious economic consequences.
The latest measures form part of Trump's long-running “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran. The US president reinstated the policy after returning to office in January 2025.
Iran has repeatedly rejected the sanctions strategy, arguing that economic restrictions and threats have not achieved Washington's objectives.
The dispute comes amid continuing tensions between the United States and Iran following the outbreak of war on February 28. Although an April 8 ceasefire ended the most intense fighting, clashes have continued around the Strait of Hormuz, a major global energy route.
The Strait has become a major point of disagreement between Washington and Tehran. Iran has blocked the waterway and said it will not reopen it until the United States lifts its naval blockade of Iranian ports, removes oil sanctions and unfreezes Iranian assets held abroad.
Trump's latest economic threat therefore comes as both sides remain at odds over sanctions, access to the Strait of Hormuz and the wider conflict.
Iran, however, maintains that increased economic pressure will not force it to abandon its position.
