The National Weather Service has warned of hazardous heat through Thursday, with conditions also increasing concerns about wildfire risks across parts of the region.
TEMPERATURES NEAR RECORD LEVELS
Burbank, north of Los Angeles, recorded a temperature of 102F, or about 39C, on Saturday.
The reading came close to the region’s October temperature record, which was set in 1987.
Forecasters expect temperatures to remain unusually high as a persistent high-pressure system continues to affect southern California.
WILDFIRE CONCERNS RISE
The combination of high temperatures and dry conditions is increasing concern about wildfire risks in the region.
The latest heat comes after southern California experienced several periods of intense heat earlier in the year.
Authorities are warning residents in affected areas to take precautions as the hot conditions continue.
BROADER WEATHER DISRUPTION
The extreme heat in California is occurring alongside severe weather and wildfire concerns elsewhere.
Indonesia is also experiencing a significant wildfire season, with fires affecting parts of Western Kalimantan and southern Sumatra.
Dry conditions have allowed fires to spread through normally wet peatland areas, contributing to poor air quality in parts of Southeast Asia.
