‎Dangote Could See $23 Billion Boost to Fortune as Refinery Enters Historic IPO ‎
Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote could see a major increase in the value of his fortune following the launch of the initial public offering (IPO) of his massive oil refinery.

‎The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals is entering Nigeria’s capital market in what is set to become Africa’s largest initial public offering, giving investors an opportunity to buy a stake in one of the continent’s biggest industrial projects.

‎The refinery is being valued at roughly $47 billion to $49 billion, depending on the valuation basis used. Dangote remains the dominant shareholder, meaning the market value assigned to the refinery could have a significant impact on the billionaire’s overall wealth.

‎How the IPO Could Increase Dangote’s Wealth

‎The potential increase in Dangote’s fortune is linked largely to the value placed on his ownership of the refinery.

‎The company is offering 4.1 billion shares at ₦525 each, with the transaction targeting about ₦2.15 trillion, or approximately $1.6 billion, if fully subscribed. The shares are expected to be listed on the Nigerian Exchange.

‎The IPO valuation gives investors a clearer market-based indication of what the refinery could be worth. Since Dangote retains a large majority stake, any significant increase in the company’s valuation could translate into billions of dollars in additional paper wealth for him.

‎That is why estimates suggest the refinery deal could potentially add around $23 billion to Dangote’s fortune and move him closer to the upper tier of the world’s wealthiest individuals.

‎However, the increase would represent the value of his holdings rather than cash paid directly into his personal account.

‎Dangote Refinery Now at the Centre of Africa’s Biggest IPO

‎The refinery, located near Lagos, was developed at a cost of about $20 billion and began operations in 2024.

‎It currently has a processing capacity of about 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day, making it one of the largest single-train refineries in the world.

‎The company has also announced plans to invest approximately $14.3 billion to expand capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2029.

‎The refinery has become increasingly important to Nigeria’s petroleum sector, helping reduce the country’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products while also positioning Nigeria as an exporter of refined fuels.

‎Strong Financial Performance

‎The refinery’s financial performance has also improved significantly.

The business recorded a $1.82 billion net profit in the first half of 2026, compared with a loss of about $476 million during the same period of the previous year.

‎The company has benefited from strong demand for refined petroleum products and disruptions to global refining capacity, particularly amid geopolitical tensions affecting oil markets.

‎What the IPO Means for Dangote

‎For Dangote, the IPO represents more than simply raising capital.

‎It gives the public access to a stake in one of his most valuable businesses while providing a clearer market valuation for an asset that was previously privately held.

‎The transaction could therefore reshape estimates of Dangote’s wealth and potentially strengthen his position among the world’s richest people.

‎Forbes currently ranks Dangote among the world’s wealthiest billionaires, while he remains Africa’s richest person.

‎The IPO is scheduled to run from September 14 to October 13, 2026, with trading expected to begin later in the year.
