‎CHINA STEPS UP AI APPLICATION AND REGULATION AS GENERATIVE AI USE SURGES
China is expanding the use of generative artificial intelligence across different sectors while strengthening efforts to establish rules aimed at managing the technology’s growing impact.

‎The country’s approach is increasingly focused not only on advancing artificial intelligence capabilities but also on putting AI technologies into practical use and developing a regulatory framework around their deployment.
‎
‎MORE THAN 700 MILLION GENERATIVE AI USERS
‎
‎China had more than 700 million generative artificial intelligence users as of June 2026, representing an increase of 98 million users from December 2025.
‎
‎The rapid growth reflects the expanding role of generative AI in everyday activities and professional environments, with the technology being used for tasks ranging from content creation and programming to office work and research.
‎
‎The growing user base has also increased the need for clearer rules covering the development and application of AI systems.
‎
‎THOUSANDS OF COMPANIES DEVELOPING AI TECHNOLOGIES
‎
‎The country has also recorded significant growth in businesses involved in artificial intelligence.
‎
‎More than 10,700 companies were identified as being involved in areas including AI large models, AI agents, robotics and related technologies.
‎
‎The expansion has contributed to the wider adoption of AI across industries, with applications emerging in agriculture, manufacturing, programming, scientific research and other areas.
‎
‎REGULATORY FRAMEWORK CONTINUES TO EXPAND
‎
‎Alongside technological development, Chinese authorities have increased efforts to regulate artificial intelligence.
‎
‎Around 20 AI-related regulations have been formulated since June 2025 as authorities work to establish standards for the development and use of the technology.
‎
‎The regulatory push is intended to address emerging risks while allowing AI development and applications to continue expanding.
‎
‎AI USE SPREADS ACROSS INDUSTRIES
‎
‎Artificial intelligence is increasingly being integrated into practical activities in China.
‎
‎In agriculture, AI technologies are being used in areas connected to production and management, while manufacturers are incorporating AI into industrial processes.
‎
‎The technology is also being applied to programming, office-related tasks, scientific research and robotics.
‎
‎The expansion of these applications has shifted attention toward how AI can deliver practical benefits beyond the development of increasingly sophisticated models.
‎
‎CONCERNS OVER AI-RELATED RISKS
‎
‎The rapid development of generative AI has also raised concerns about potential risks associated with its use.
‎
‎Issues including deepfakes and the exposure of children to harmful AI-generated content have become part of discussions surrounding the technology.
‎
‎Experts have stressed the importance of maintaining a balance between encouraging technological innovation and preventing potential harm as AI becomes more widely available.
‎
‎China's expanding regulatory efforts are therefore developing alongside its push to increase AI adoption, reflecting the growing importance of managing both the opportunities and risks associated with the technology.
