The attack was part of a wider assault on communities in the area, with several residents also reported killed during the violence.
The affected communities include Aondona, Ahume, Tyolaha and Tse-Ubiam, where attackers reportedly moved through different locations during the weekend.
The police officer, identified as Magaji, was stationed at a checkpoint along the Naka axis. He was reportedly killed after exhausting his ammunition while attempting to respond to the attackers.
The Chairman of Gwer West Local Government Area, Victor Ormin, said the violence had left communities devastated, describing the situation as a serious security crisis.
Residents in the affected areas were forced to flee as the attackers moved through the communities, while security personnel worked to respond to the situation.
Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the attacks and called for stronger security measures to protect residents and prevent further violence.
The governor also expressed support for the position of traditional rulers in the state concerning the presence of armed criminal elements in Benue communities.
Security authorities are expected to continue efforts to restore calm and protect communities affected by the attacks.
