The 33-year-old centre-back confirmed his decision on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, saying he had reflected on his future before deciding that the time had come to step aside and allow younger players to take over.
Rüdiger made his Germany debut in 2014 and went on to earn 86 international caps, establishing himself as one of the country's leading defenders during more than a decade with the national team.
His final appearance came at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Germany's campaign ended in the round of 32 against Paraguay. The defender subsequently took time to consider his international future before making his decision.
In announcing his retirement, Rüdiger said he wanted to create room for the next generation while beginning a new chapter focused entirely on his club career.
The Berlin-born defender was part of Germany's squad at several major tournaments, including the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and the 2024 European Championship. He also featured in Germany's successful 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup campaign.
Although Germany did not win a major senior international title during his long spell with the team apart from the Confederations Cup, Rüdiger became an important figure in the national setup and was recognised for his aggressive defending, physical strength and leadership.
His retirement also comes at a period of transition for Germany. The national team is preparing for a new phase under coach Jürgen Klopp, who is expected to oversee a rebuilding process following the team's disappointing World Cup exit.
At club level, Rüdiger remains committed to Real Madrid, where he intends to concentrate on extending his career at the highest level.
His departure leaves Germany with another experienced option removed from its defensive ranks as the national side begins preparing for its next generation.
Rüdiger's decision marks the conclusion of one of the most prominent German defensive careers of the past decade, with his international record now standing at 86 appearances and three goals.
