Trump rules out new US strikes on Iran before midterm elections
Trump made the announcement on Thursday as efforts to find a way out of the months-long war continue, with disagreements over Iran’s nuclear programme and the strategically important Strait of Hormuz still unresolved.
TRUMP ANNOUNCES PAUSE IN MILITARY ACTION
Trump said the United States would not attack Iran at any point before the November elections, publicly ruling out further military action during a politically significant period.
The announcement comes after weeks of uncertainty over whether the conflict could escalate before Americans head to the polls.
The president has previously indicated that a larger military escalation could remain possible after the elections, while continuing to push for an agreement with Tehran.
US AND IRAN CONTINUE NEGOTIATIONS
Trump said discussions between the United States and Iran were progressing, although major differences remain between the two sides.
Washington and Tehran have exchanged proposals in recent weeks aimed at ending the conflict and restoring normal movement through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has indicated that it is reviewing the latest US proposal and is expected to respond within days.
IRAN REJECTS KEY US NUCLEAR DEMANDS
A major obstacle in the negotiations remains Iran’s nuclear programme.
US Vice-President JD Vance has said any agreement would require Iran to make a meaningful reduction in its uranium enrichment capacity.
Iran, however, has maintained that it will not abandon uranium enrichment or surrender its stockpile, keeping a significant disagreement between the two countries unresolved.
STRAIT OF HORMUZ REMAINS A MAJOR ISSUE
The Strait of Hormuz continues to be central to the negotiations because of its importance to global energy supplies.
The waterway has experienced major disruption during the conflict, affecting the movement of oil and other energy shipments.
Recent attacks on vessels have increased concerns over the security of shipping through the strait, while negotiations have included proposals aimed at reopening the route and restoring more stable energy flows.
CONFLICT CREATES POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC PRESSURE
The war has also become an increasingly important issue ahead of the US midterm elections.
Higher fuel prices linked to the conflict have added to concerns about the cost of living, while the administration faces pressure over its handling of the prolonged military confrontation.
A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 60 per cent of Americans disapproved of Trump's handling of the Iran conflict.
Despite Trump's announcement, the wider military situation remains unsettled. The United States continues to maintain significant forces in the region, while Iran and Washington have yet to reach a final agreement to end the conflict.
